문득 어떤 노래 가사를 읊조리고 있었습니다. 누가 불렀는지도 기억이 안 나는데 왠지 귓 속에 Jason Castro의 목소리가 감돌더군요. 기억나는 가사로 구글을 해보니 If I fell 이라는 비틀즈 노래이고, 역시나 Jason Castro가 아메리칸 아이돌에서 불렀더라고요. 이 김에 아메리칸 아이돌 시즌 7에서 제이슨 카스트로가 부른 노래 중 제가 좋아했던 노래들을 찾아봤습니다. 이 친구 선곡 센스 하나는 참 좋았죠.

할렐루야는 제이슨 카스트로를 Top12로, 그리고 그 이후 승승장구하도록 만든 노래입니다. 전 사실 공중파, 그것도 아이돌이라는 쇼에서 저 정도 종교색을 가진 노래를 용인하는 것을 보고 놀랐었습니다. 뭐 시즌 뒤로 갈수록 주 찬양이 점입가경이 되긴 했지만요. 미국 상황이 뭔가 좋지는 않구나 하는 생각도 들더군요. 원래 사람들이 힘들다 보면 자신들의 뿌리에서, 문화의 기초에서 그 해결책을 찾으려 하잖아요. 뭐, 워낙 보수적인 FOX TV여서 가능했을지도 모르죠.
시즌 7 내내 제이슨 카스트로와 브룩 화이트는 괜히 제게 미움을 받았었죠. 제가 좋아하는 음색도 아니었고, 음역이 너무 좁았고 부르는 모습이 윤복희스러웠거든요. 뭐 장르 자체도 그렇지만 큰 무대가 어울려 보이지는 않았어요. 게다가 제이슨 카스트로가 힘들게 고음을 뽑아낼 때마다 여간 조마조마한게 아니라서요. 그래도 지금 와서 생각해 보면 기억나는 노래들을 참 많이 불러줬어요. 둘다 스튜디오 버전도 참 좋았고. 시즌 8 초반에 제이슨 카스트로가 자기 동생이 오디션 받을 때 따라 나왔는데 무지 반갑더라고요. 미운 정 고운 정 다 들었나봐요.
제이슨 카스트로 하면 중국인 친구랑 떠들던 기억이 납니다. 그 친구는 제이슨이 타오화옌桃花眼이라며 마음에 안 든다고 그랬거든요.(뭐 관상학적으로 도화안은 음란하고 바람둥이의 눈이라고 하지만, 현대 중국에서는 매력적이거나 요염한 눈매+바람둥이 등으로 생각하더군요) 뭐, 그 친구나 저나 결국은 생긴 것 가지고 싫어한 것일지도...ㅋㅋ (이상하게도 미국여자들은 사족을 못 쓰더만 -_- Michelle을 불렀을 때 사이먼은 지금 공연이 라디오가 아니라 TV라서 다행이다, 잘생긴 얼굴로 커버가 된다는 식으로 말했었죠)
사족: Jeff Buckley의 할렐루야를 들으니 헨델의 합창곡인 할렐루야를 포스팅 하고 싶은 마음이 굴뚝 같았지만, 다음에 합창곡에 대한 글을 포스팅 할 때를 대비해서 아껴두려고요. 흐흐
